How to Build a Morning Ritual That Protects Your Energy
Oct 03, 2026
What if your morning wasn't something to survive, but a moment to come home to yourself?
How you begin your day matters.
Not because you need to become one of those people who wakes at 5am, (although I am reading 'The 5 a.m. Club' by Robin Sharma right now... ) drinks green juice, meditates for 45 minutes and completes a workout before most of the world has opened its eyes.
Honestly?
Who has time for that?
Especially when you're a nurse, caregiver, parent or simply someone carrying a lot.
Your morning doesn't need to be perfect.
It needs to be intentional.
Because for many of us, the day begins with giving.
We wake up and immediately check our phones.
We answer messages.
We look at emails.
We start thinking about work.
We get children ready.
We care for partners, pets, parents or other family members.
And before we've even had a chance to ask ourselves how we're doing, we're already responding to everyone else's needs.
Sound familiar?
What if you started differently?
A morning ritual is simply a small collection of intentional practices that help you transition into your day.
It doesn't need to be elaborate.
In fact, I believe simple is better.
The purpose isn't to make you more productive.
The purpose is to help you feel more present, grounded and connected to yourself.
Routine vs. Ritual
There is a subtle difference.
A routine is something we do regularly.
A ritual is something we do with intention.
Brushing your teeth is a routine.
Sitting with your morning coffee, taking three slow breaths and asking yourself, “What do I need today?” can become a ritual.
Neither is better.
But when we bring intention into something ordinary, it can become an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves.
Your nervous system doesn't need another demand
When we're already stressed or depleted, adding a complicated morning routine can become another source of pressure.
That's not what we're looking for here.
We're looking for small signals of safety, steadiness and connection.
Perhaps it's taking a few slow breaths.
Opening the curtains and letting in natural light.
Standing outside for a few minutes.
Stretching.
Sitting quietly with your coffee.
Writing down what you're grateful for.
Listening to music.
Spending a few minutes with your dog or cat.
There is no magic formula.
The question is: what helps you feel more like yourself?
The 10-Minute Morning Ritual
If the idea of creating a morning ritual feels overwhelming, start with ten minutes. You can use the worksheet created for you HERE.
Minutes 1–2: Arrive
Before you reach for your phone, notice yourself.
Take a couple of comfortable, slow breaths.
Ask:
How am I feeling this morning?
There is no right answer.
You don't have to change how you feel.
Just notice.
Minutes 3–5: Regulate
Choose something that helps you settle.
You might breathe slowly, stretch, step outside or simply sit quietly.
The goal isn't to force yourself to feel calm.
It's to give yourself a moment to pause.
Minutes 6–8: Connect
Ask yourself:
What do I need today?
Maybe it's patience.
Maybe it's a boundary.
Maybe it's movement.
Maybe it's rest.
Maybe it's simply permission not to do everything.
Listen to the answer.
Minutes 9–10: Set an intention
Instead of beginning the day asking:
“What do I need to get done?”
try asking:
“How do I want to move through today?”
Perhaps your intention is:
I will slow down.
I will protect my energy.
I will ask for help when I need it.
I will not take responsibility for everyone else's emotions.
I will remember why my work matters.
Or perhaps your intention is simply:
Today, I will be kind to myself.
Protecting your energy also means creating boundaries
One of the most powerful parts of a morning ritual may actually be deciding what doesn't get your attention immediately.
You don't have to answer every message the moment you wake up.
You don't have to check work emails before you've even got out of bed.
You don't have to consume everyone else's news before you've checked in with yourself.
Try creating a small morning boundary.
For example:
“I won't check work emails until after breakfast.”
Or:
“The first 15 minutes of my day belong to me.”
Small boundaries can make a surprisingly big difference.
And please don't turn this into another thing you have to get right
This is important.
If you miss your morning ritual tomorrow, you haven't failed.
If you only have three minutes instead of ten, that's okay.
If some mornings you don't want to meditate, don't.
If your morning is chaotic because life happens, that's life.
Burnout recovery isn't about creating another set of rules you have to follow perfectly.
It's about learning to listen to yourself.
To notice your needs.
To recognise your limits.
And to begin making choices that support rather than deplete you.
Your morning belongs to you too.
You spend so much of your life caring for others.
Your patients.
Your students.
Your colleagues.
Your family.
Your clients.
Your community.
But you belong on that list too.
Your energy matters.
Your wellbeing matters.
And taking ten minutes to reconnect with yourself isn't selfish.
It is a small act of self-care, awareness and intention.
So tomorrow morning, before you give your energy to the world, pause.
Take a breath.
Put your feet on the floor.
Ask yourself:
“What do I need today?”
And listen.
Because sometimes the most important person we forget to check in with…
is ourselves.
