I’m Sam Bell
RN,
Midwife. Educator.
Integrative Health Coach + Burnout Survivor!

I help nurses recognize burnout, take steps to prevent it, and find a path forward when they’re already exhausted.

You spend your days caring for others.
You deserve support, too.

For more than 40 years, healthcare has been a huge part of my life.

I’ve worked at the bedside.
I’ve worked in management.
I’ve worked in public health.
I’ve taught, supported, advocated and cared for people
through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

My career has given me incredible experiences, but it has also taught me some hard lessons.

I know what it is like to be exhausted while still showing up.

  • To keep going because people are relying on you.
  • To put your own needs at the bottom of the list.
  • To mistake resilience for simply being able to endure more

I know what burnout can take from you—not just physically, but emotionally, mentally and personally.

Somewhere along the way, I learned something that changed everything:
"Being good at caring for everyone else
doesn't mean we automatically know how to care for ourselves" - Sam Bell

My Purpose and My Goal

My mission is simple:

To help nurses care for themselves with the same compassion they give to their patients, their friends and their families, so they can reconnect with the person they were when they first chose nursing — someone with a desire to make a difference and do good in the world.

But my vision extends beyond helping individual nurses overcome or prevent burnout.

I want to contribute to a nursing profession where people feel valued, supported and empowered to sustain a long, fulfilling career without sacrificing their own wellbeing along the way.

By equipping nurses with practical tools to recognise and address stress, regulate their nervous systems, protect their energy, establish healthy boundaries and reconnect with their purpose, I hope to help prevent burnout before it takes hold and support those already experiencing it to find their way forward.

Because when we support nurses to thrive, we also strengthen the profession.

I want to contribute to better nurse retention, encourage recruitment into a profession that people can feel proud and excited to join, and help create a future where experienced nurses want to stay and new generations of nurses are inspired to follow.

Ultimately, this is about more than preventing burnout. It's about protecting the heart of nursing, preserving experience and compassion within our healthcare systems, and creating a culture where caring for those who care becomes part of how we do healthcare.

Because nurses deserve to love their work without losing themselves in it.

My Why

I became a nurse because I wanted to care for people. I believed in the difference nurses can make.  I still do.

I also know what it means to love nursing—and I know what it feels like when exhaustion makes that love difficult to find.

It pains me to see what is happening to our nurses because of the pressures and demands being put on them.  I know I can't change the system I can certainly help nurses in the system to survive and thrive.  And so I have decided that it is more important for me now to help my nursing colleagues avoid what I went though so that they are better able to help and care for their patients. The world is a better place when nurses can do what they became a nurse to do.

When I see that 30-60% of new nurses drop out of health care within two years, it tells me there is a problem we need to fix.  Maybe I can't fix the entire system or everyone in it, but it will give me great satisfaction to help as many as I can.

Why this work is personal:  my journey from burnout to joy

For more than 40 years, I have dedicated my life to caring for others as a Registered Nurse and Midwife, including leadership roles within the NHS during the late 1990's. Yet behind the professional role, I was navigating my own struggles with Complex PTSD, Social Anxiety Disorder, and, eventually, this contributed to my first period of burnout. With the benefit of hindsight, I now understand I was struggling with what we nowadays call 'Compassion Fatigue '- working as a Quality and Complaints Manager, I struggled every day to mitigate patients' and their families complaints when I knew they were well-founded- the healthcare system was failing them, and it was my job to defend it.

My personal healing journey changed everything. I began to understand the importance of nervous system regulation, self-compassion and healthy boundaries. As I healed, I reconnected with my intuition, embraced my spiritual gifts and discovered a deeper sense of joy and purpose.

I learned that caring for others should never mean losing ourselves, and that our past does not have to define our future.

My second experience of burnout was more recent. You’d think I would know better after all the healing work I’d done! But life had other plans. The circumstances were different, and I finally understood that separating work from personal life is often a myth. We are one person, navigating life’s challenges while caring for our patients and everyone around us.

The difference this time?  I recognised the signs early and found my way back to JOY much faster.

I see nurses struggling with stress, compassion fatigue and the pressures of a healthcare system under strain. Too many are leaving a profession they once loved. I know how easily we can lose ourselves in caring for others, and I am passionate about changing that.

My own journey continues to evolve, and I keep learning and adding to my toolbox. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that nurses need practical support to protect their well-being and to sustain their careers.

Through Sam Bell Inspired and Burnout to Joy, I help nurses recognize stress, regulate their nervous systems, establish healthy boundaries and reconnect with their purpose.

My approach is warm, honest and practical, combining evidence-informed wellbeing practices with self-awareness and compassion. I want you to feel heard, supported and never judged.

What I Believe...

  • I believe we are not meant to spend our lives simply surviving.
  • I believe nurses are extraordinary.
  • I believe nurses deserve to have careers that don't cost them their health, their identity or their joy.
  • I believe nursing has the power to change lives.
  • I berlieve each year the system expects more from our nurses and does not properly acknowledge or respect their contribution and dedication
  • I believe our bodies communicate with us long before we are forced to stop.
  • I believe understanding the nervous system can change the way we experience stress.I believe boundaries are an act of self-respect—not selfishness.
  • I believe joy isn't frivolous.

And I believe that beneath the roles we take on—the nurse, the mother, the manager, the teacher, the caregiver, the partner, the responsible one—an authentic version of us is still waiting to be remembered.

"You don't need to become someone new.
You need to come home to yourself"
That belief is at the heart of everything I do.

My Purpose

To Help Nurses Come Back to Themselves

I became a nurse because I wanted to care for people.
I stayed in healthcare for more than 40 years because I believed in the difference nurses can make.
I still do.
But I also know what happens when nurses are expected to keep giving, keep adapting, keep showing up and keep caring—while their own needs become an afterthought.
I've lived it.
I've seen it in colleagues.
And I've witnessed the toll it can take on an extraordinary profession.

Nursing Is More Than a Job

Nursing asks so much of us.
We care for people when they are frightened, vulnerable, grieving, hurting or uncertain.
We hold space for families.
We make difficult decisions.
We manage complexity.
We advocate.
We comfort.
We lead.
We educate.
We carry stories home with us.
And often, we do all of this while working within systems that are stretched, understaffed and under pressure.
Somewhere along the way, many nurses become incredibly good at caring for everyone except themselves.
We tell ourselves:
“I'm fine.”
“It's just a busy stretch.”
“Everyone is exhausted.”
“I'll deal with myself when things settle down.”
But what if things don't settle down?
What if the cost of continually putting ourselves last is that we slowly lose the very part of ourselves that made us want to nurse in the first place?

This Is Why I Created Burnout to Joy

I don't believe the answer is simply to teach nurses to become more resilient so they can tolerate more.
Nurses don't need to become better at enduring unhealthy levels of stress.
We need to understand what chronic stress is doing to us.
We need to recognize the early signs of depletion.
We need practical ways to regulate our nervous systems.
We need permission to have boundaries.
We need to reconnect with purpose.
And we need to create a culture where looking after ourselves isn't seen as taking something away from our patients or our profession.
Because a nurse's wellbeing matters too.

My Purpose Is Bigger Than Burnout

My purpose is not simply to help nurses recover when they are already burned out.
It is to help change the conversation around nurse wellbeing.
From surviving the shift to having the tools to recover between shifts.
From “that's just nursing” to asking what sustainable nursing can actually look like.
From self-sacrifice to sustainable caring.
From compassion fatigue to protected compassion.
From losing ourselves in the work to finding our way back to the nurse—and the person—we were before burnout took over.

Because I Still Believe in Nursing

After more than four decades in this profession, I haven't lost my belief in nursing.
Quite the opposite.
I believe nurses are extraordinary.
I believe nursing has the power to change lives.
And I believe nurses deserve to have careers that don't cost them their health, their identity or their joy.
I want nurses to stay—not because they feel trapped by responsibility, but because they can find meaning and fulfilment in the work again.
I want nurses to feel supported before they reach breaking point.
I want us to talk about wellbeing before the resignation letter is written.
And I want the next generation of nurses to enter this profession knowing that caring for themselves is not separate from caring for others.
It is part of it.

My Why

I created Burnout to Joy because I know what it means to love nursing—and I know what it feels like when exhaustion makes that love difficult to find.
My purpose is to help nurses protect what brought them to nursing in the first place:
their compassion, their purpose, their humanity and their joy.
Because I don't want nurses to simply survive their careers.
I want them to have the opportunity to thrive in them.
And if we can help even one nurse feel like herself again, that matters.
That is why I'm here.
That is my purpose.

Beyond the Professional Me

There’s More to Me Than My Job Title

For more than 40 years, healthcare has been a huge part of my life—but it isn't all of who I am.

I'm married to Glen. I'm a dog mum to Dexter and Rubi (Dexter is my office manager...) and I'm a very happy crazy cat mum to Purrcey (aka Pickles), our Ragdoll three cat rescues—Paddington, Donny and Jacki—so life at home is rarely boring!

I love to travel. I have lived in 3 different countries) sunshine, baseball, chocolate, red wine, puppies, cats, crystals, full moons, knitting and crocheting. I've lived on an olive farm in Spain (where my neighbours were chickens and pigs) and love discovering new places, beautiful spaces and the little moments that make life feel good.

I've learned that joy is my #1 Core Desired Feeling, and it isn't always found in the big moments. Sometimes it's a sunny morning, animals at your feet, laughter with people you love, creating something with your hands, or simply having time to breathe.

I'm still learning, still growing and still figuring things out—and I think that's part of being human.

Because behind the nurse, educator, coach and speaker is simply Sam - a woman who has experienced the highs and lows, learned a lot along the way, and believes that life isn't meant to be merely survived

It's meant to be lived—with purpose, connection and joy.

MY REALLY OFFICIAL BIO (the TL; DR version)
